Being Told at Naval Row

‘Being Told at Naval Row’ 2012 Oil on Canvas, 76 x 101 cm.  The Paintings in this series are informed by several layers of responses to actual events and spaces, and are a synthesis of diverse ambitions. The paintings often begin with an improvised composition made on the raw canvas, in the case of this painting the starting point was two figures sitting in a car. I am interested in how narrative works in pictorial space, the notion of a conversation taking place in a car combines something fairly universal with specific tangible moments. The gripping of a steering wheel, holding onto a wind shield, and finding a moment where two people are engaged in talking and listening and separate in their focus. The location of Naval Row E14, alongside the busy routes of the Aspen way and DLR above ground suggested this fragment of a story.
