“East India DLR stop” 2012 oil on canvas 121 x 92 cms.
The painting is based on drawings made on site, the Docklands Light Railway stop is over the road from Mulberry Place, the buildings of Tower Hamlets Council.
“Barrier Park Cafe” 2012 oil on canvas, 121 x 92 cms.
The painting is based on drawings made at the cafe, which was built in the Millenium Year, along with the brilliantly designed park that it sits in. The view from the cafe opens out into a number of vistas, into a grid of small trees, south towards the Thames and the Thames Barrier itself, and on the right the riverside apartments running along the western boundary of the park.
“North Woolwich” 2012 oil on canvas 92 x 121 cms. The painting is based on a couple of drawings made at the North Woolwich ferry area. The landscaping, seating and car parking area just west of the Ferry terminal is quite run down, as is some of North Woolwich itself, there are road works underway and it feels like the regeneration money is just about to reach North Woolwich. I found the immediate surroundings evocative, partly because of the neglected feel of the 70′s landscaping, just set behind the Thames waterside, there is a large enclosure with many Satellite dishes. As I was making the drawings, they struck me as being like eggs in a nest, they certainly gave off a rather strange aura.
Below are a couple of photos I took on one of the days I went there to draw.
“Search at East India” 2012 oil on canvas, 86 x 132 cms.
The painting is based on a drawing made at East India DLR station, I have actually made a number of drawings at this site. The locality grabs the attention because of the DLR line runs overhead, the A13 link road passes underneath, there are a number of iconic buildings in view – the O2, the Reuters building, The so called ‘Lipstick’ building, which is actually the Radisson Hotel with the intake of the Blackwall Tunnel in front of it.
“The Social Entrepreneur” 2012 oil on canvas 76 x 102 cms.
The painting is based on a drawing made on site in the City of London, with The Shard and the LLoyds building in the background, at St Mary Axe. EC3
I have been based at Bromley by Bow Centre for 25 years, the Organisation is based on the vision of the Social Entrepreneur – a person who creates social capital.
“The Unlimited Dream Company” 2012 Oil on Canvas 96 x 117 cms, the painting is based on an earlier painting called “Outskirts of the City” from 2002. The composition is loosely base on drawings made on site at East India DLR station, on the Aspen Way E14.
The painting also reflects notions about the city being re-inhabited by nature, a central feature of the brilliant Novel ”The Unlimited Dream Company” by J.G.Ballard.
