Phot:- Rafar and Nihar, with work in progress.
Chris Warmington runs Signs of Life, a young people’s Enterprise project at Bromley By Bow Centre. Some years ago I founded the project, and Chris has led the enterprise for the last 6 or 7 years. Two years ago he asked me and Maria Alvarez, one of the tutors and Ceramic Artist to accompany some of the young people on a trip to Nicaragua to paint a mural.
This summer two of the Artists returned the visit to London and the purpose was to create a mural with the young people in Bromley By Bow and learn more about the techniques and approaches of the Rafa and Katy, who have been painting murals since they were Children.

One of the interesting things about working with Rafa and Katy was their use of “Harmonic lines”. They created a scale drawing of the walls that were to receive the mural, and Katy began to draw fluid lines across all the spaces on the drawing – saying she was creating the harmonic lines of the mural. Halfway through the first day, we decided to use these lines as a basis for making the mural onto shaped panels.
